A man (Amitabh Bachchan) is found wounded on railway tracks and when he awakens he has no memory of who he is and doesn't remember anything about his life. Six years later he is living with a wealthy couple and is now named Naresh Dutt. One day he begins to regain his
memory when he watches a film and realizes that the actress in the film is related to him somehow. It is then that he discovers the actress in the film is none other than his wife Rekha Roy (Rekha). He finds out that she is now a very successful film actress
changing her name to Sunita Devi and her manager is none other than Ranjeet Malik (Prem Chopra) who used to be his best friend. In flashbacks he remembers that his real name is Amit Roy and Ranjit was the one who attempted to kill him six years earlier by throwing him off the train he was traveling on with Rekha. Amit also discovers that his young son who is now 10 years old has been sent to a boarding school and sets out a plan to regain custody of his son. First however he plans on taking revenge against Ranjit. Amit comes up with a plan to re-enter Rekha and Ranjit's lives by disguising himself as a film producer. He meets with Rekha and Ranjit and offers Rekha the opportunity to act in his new film titled  Rekha and Ranjit grow suspicious of Naresh Dutt as they start to realize that he bears a striking resemblance to Rekha's supposedly deceased husband Amit Roy and the storyline of his film eerily mirrors Rekha's past life. Will she discover the true identity of Naresh Dutt? and what revenge has Amit/Naresh got planned for Ranjit?

The story of a man who is found wounded in a coma besides railway tracks. After waking up from the coma he realizes that he does not know who he is and where he has come from. One Day when he is watching a movie, he is astonished as he feels that the actress of the movie was related to him, just that second his whole life comes back to him and he is now fully aware about the incidents that took place.

Calcutta based Amit Roy witnesses a dance artiste by the name of Rekha, and is smitten by her beauty and talent, so much so that he approaches her parents to ask for her hand in marriage. Rekha's parents are happy to get their daughter married to such a suitable young man, and soon the marriage takes place. After the marriage, Amit finds out that he is not the ideal man for Rekha, and both make compromises and continue living with each other. Soon, a son, Sumit, is born and it appears that Rekha is now destined to live the life of a middle-class housewife. Then U.S. returned Ronjit Malik enters their lives, and nothing seems the same any more for Rekha. Ronjit becomes a frequent visitor to their house, and he even proposes that Rekha continue on with her dancing and even act in movies. All four decide to travel to Bombay to further her career. This journey ends tragically, as a drunken Amit falls from the train, resulting in his death. With nothing to hold her back, Rekha admits Sumit in a boarding school in distant Darjeeling and embarks with Ronjit on a career that she had always dreamed about. She does meet with considerable success and goes on to be the reigning leading actress of Bengali cinema. Then a producer, Sanyal, introduces her to Naresh Dutt, a Bombay-based financier, who would like her to act in his movie titled "Do Anjaane", to which Rekha agrees. Then a series of events follow which lead both Rekha and Ronjit to question whether Amit is really dead or has his restless ghost come to haunt them.

Amit a clerk in an office marries Rekha, whose desire to be known as a famous dancer, gathers dust under the responsibilities of a housewife and then a mother. She becomes restless as her ambitions are thwarted. Amit's friend Ranjit senses her restlessness and fuels her desire for fame and recognition but she hesitates in taking any action about furthering her interests due to her love for Amit. Then Destiny plays a cruel trick on her when Amit dies in a train accident. In dire straits due to shortage of funds, she is persuaded by Ranjit to pursue her dreams and he makes her a famous dancer. A film producer 'Naresh Dutt' requests her to act in his venture. She accepts and discovers in due course of time that the producer seems to know a lot about her past life.
