Synopsis[edit]

Preetam (Guru Dutt), a struggling cartoonist, meets Anita (Madhubala) at a tennis match, where she is watching her favorite tennis star. Anita, a wealthy and westernized heiress is controlled by her feminist aunt, Sita Devi (Lalita Pawar). Sita is suspicious of men, and cultivates her attitudes in Anita. However, to receive her fortune, her father's will decrees that Anita must marry within one month of turning 21. Sita Devi doesn't agree with this, and tries to set Anita up with a sham marriage which will soon lead to divorce, thereby giving her both freedom and a fortune. Sita hires Preetam to marry Anita, but doesn't know that the pair have already met. Preetam is kept from Anita after their marriage, but he kidnaps her and takes her to the traditional house of his brother.
While at the house, Anita befriends Preetam's sister-in-law, and begins to see the merit in becoming a traditional Indian wife. Preetam is worried that he has lost Anita, and expedites their divorce by providing false, incrimiating evidence to the court. Preetam then leaves Mumbai, heartbroken. Anita now recognizes her feelings for Preetam and rushes to meet him at the airport. In the end, the couple is reunited.

Madhubala died four years later in 1969 of a heart ailment at the age of 36.

Pyaasa

bimdb rating-****/*****
Pyaasa  is a 1957 Indian film produced by, directed by, and starring Guru Dutt. The film tells the story of struggling poet, trying to make his works known in post-independence India, and a prostitute with a heart of gold who eventually helps him get his poems published. The music was composed by S.D. Burman.
With the commercial success of thrillers like Baazi, Jaal, Aar Paar and C.I.D. as well as comedies like Mr. & Mrs. '55, Guru Dutt and his studio were financially secure and established. From 1957, he could now make movies he really wanted to make, including Pyaasa. In 2002, Pyaasa was ranked at #160 on the Sight & Sound critics' and directors' poll of all-time greatest films.[1] In 2005, Pyaasa was rated as one of the 100 best films of all time by Time Magazine, which called it "the soulfully romantic of the lot."[2] Indiatimes Movies ranks the movie amongst the Top 25 Must See Bollywood Films.[3] On the occasion of Valentine's Day 2011 Time magazine has declared it as one of the top 10 romantic movies of all time.[4]

Plot[edit]

Mala Sinha(right) and Waheeda Rehman(left) in the confrontation scene, which is considered one of the film's highlights.
Vijay (Guru Dutt) is an unsuccessful poet whose works are not taken seriously by publishers or his brothers (who sell his poems as waste paper). Unable to bear their taunting that he is a good-for-nothing, he stays away from home and is often out on the streets. He encounters a good-hearted prostitute named Gulabo (Waheeda Rehman), who is enamoured with his poetry and falls in love with him. He also encounters his ex-girlfriend Meena (Mala Sinha) from college and finds out that she has married a big publisher Mr. Ghosh (Rehman) for financial security. Ghosh hires him as a servant to find out more about him and Meena. A dead beggar to whom Vijay gave his coat and whom he tries to save unsuccessfully from the path of a running train is mistaken for Vijay. Gulabo goes to Ghosh and gets his poems published. Ghosh does so feeling he can exploit the poems and make a killing. The poems are very successful. However, Vijay is alive and in the hospital after the train mishap.
Ghosh and Shyam, Vijay's close friend, refuse to recognise him and he is committed to a mental asylum since he insists he is Vijay and is thought to be mad. Vijay's brothers too are bought off by Ghosh not to recognize him and a memorial is held for the dead poet. Vijay with the help of his friend Abdul Sattar (Johnny Walker) escapes from the mental asylum and reaches the memorial service where he denounces this corrupt and materialistic world. Seeing that Vijay is alive his friend and brothers take side with a rival publisher for more money and declare this is Vijay. At a function to honour him, Vijay becomes sick of all the hypocrisy in the world around him and declares he is not Vijay. He then leaves with Gulabo to start a new life.
Production[edit]

In the original ending Guru Dutt wanted to show that Vijay left all alone but on the distributors' insistence the ending was changed. The film was originally titled Pyaas (thirst), but Guru Dutt later changed it to Pyaasa to better describe the film.[5]
The role of Shyam was originally to be played by Guru Dutt's real life friend, Johny Walker but was then assigned to one of Guru Dutt's assistant directors. Guru Dutt wanted to film red light area scenes on locations in Kolkata (then Calcutta) but the crew was attacked by a group of pimps. Guru Dutt however recreated sets on the basis of photos taken at Kolkata.
It is also surmised that the story is based on the life of film's lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi who had failed affair with poet and writer Amrita Pritam .

Professor Parimal Tripathi (Dharmendra) is a botany professor who falls in love with Sulekha Chaturvedi (Sharmila Tagore) during a women's college botany excursion. Prof. Parimal Tripathi helps the bungalow watchman to get to his village downhill to enable him to see his grandson who's fallen ill. Meanwhile he disguises himself as the bungalow watchman to protect the old man's job. Sulekha finds out one day about the cover-up and is charmed on seeing Parimal's real personality. They both get married. Parimal loves playing pranks and is the antithesis of regular professors. Sulekha, on the other hand is in awe of her jijaji (brother-in-law) Raghavendra (Om Prakash). She considers her jijaji to be highly intellectual and looks upon him as her idol. Parimal develops an inferiority complex thanks to Sulekha's excessive praise of her jijaji and decides to prove that he is in no way a lesser mortal. Jijaji, meanwhile, has written a letter to Haripad bhaiyya (David Abraham Cheulkar) asking him to send a driver who can speak good Hindi because his present driver James D'costa (Keshto Mukherjee) uses improper grammar. This provides the perfect opportunity for Parimal to get to see and interact with jijaji. Parimal becomes Pyaremohan Ilahabadi, a motor-mouth driver who pretends to hate the English language and so speaks only Hindi. So begins the comedy of errors, as Parimal and Sulekha play prank after prank on the unsuspecting jijaji.
First they pretend that Sulekha is not happy with her new marriage, then they put across the impression that Sulekha is having an affair with Pyaremohan, and if that was not enough, they get Parimal’s long-time friend Sukumar Sinha (Amitabh Bachchan), a Professor of English literature, to temporarily act as Parimal and portray him as a serious and boring lecturer, the complete opposite of Parimal's character. Pyaremohan's excessively refined Hindi, his habit of correcting jijaji's usage of the language and his persistence in getting jijaji to teach him English all serve to irk jijaji to no end and provide for many laughs. Parimal's long-time friend P K Srivastava (Asrani) is also party to the prank. His sister-in-law Vasudha (Jaya Bachchan) suspects fake 'Parimal' - Sukumar Sinha - of infidelity to his wife 'Sulekha' when he tries to get close to her. Sukumar falls in love with Vasudha who at first believed he was Parimal, but Sukumar reveals to her the real drama behind all this mix-up of situations. Lata Srivastava (Lily Chakravarty), P K Srivastava's wife, is also angered over the latest 'extra marital' love affair. But toward the end, Sukumar and Vasudha end up marrying in a temple where Haripat bhaiyya coerces Pyaremohan to 'kill' himself so that Parimal could surface. Thus jijaji comes to comprehend the whole enactment, finally admitting that he was truly fooled. The film revolves around the resolution of these funny mishaps.
Music[edit]

The music for the film was given by S. D. Burman,[3] with lyrics by Anand Bakshi. The movie has the following songs:
"Chupke Chupke Chal Ri Purvaiya"
"Sa Re Ga Ma"
"Abke Sajan Sawan Mein"
"Baagonmein Kaise Ye Phol Khilte Hai"
Degrees of separation[edit]

This film is one of two released in 1975 to cast Dharmendra and Amitabh together, the other being Sholay. Apart from these, Ram Balram was the only other film that the two starred in together, if one does not count Dharmendra's guest appearances in Andha Kanoon and Naseeb, and Amitabh's cameo in Guddi and Dost. They had a guest appearance in the 2003 movie Hum Kaun Hai?, also dubbed in Bengali.
Trivia[edit]

Jaya Bhaduri was pregnant during the making of the film. Most of her shots have been taken very carefully, as to avoid her profile view.
Mohammed Rafi has one stanza less in the song "Sa Re Ga Ma", as he was not present during the dubbing session. Kishore Kumar, who was the other singer, sang the additional stanza.
Hrishikesh Mukherjee wanted newcomers for the parts played by Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bhaduri.

Manna Dey

BANGALORE: Legendary playback singer Manna Dey died at a city hospital early on Thursday morning, after prolonged illness.

Dey, 94, who was admitted to Narayana Hrudayalaya five months ago for respiratory problems, died of cardiac arrest at 3.50am, a senior doctor at the hospital said.

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award winner singer had given several hits songs during his several decades long career which include 'Puchho na kaise maine rain bitayee', 'Ay mere pyare watan, ay mere bichhade chaman' and 'Laga chunari main daag', to name a few.

His daughter Shumita Deb and his son-in-law Jnanranjan Deb were by his bedside when the end came, his family said.

Dey is survived by two daughters, one of whom is based in the US.

"We are saddened by his loss, but he died peacefully. His last rites will be performed later in the day," his son-in-law said.

Manna Dey: Everything you wanted to know about him
Bollywood's 'King of Melody' Manna Dey dies at 94
(AFP) – 39 minutes ago
Bangalore — Legendary Bollywood singer Manna Dey, whose husky voice dominated the soundtracks of Indian movie classics for more than 60 years, died in hospital on Thursday aged 94.
The playback singer, who had been struggling with ill health for several months, died in the southern city of Bangalore after suffering multiple organ failure, a hospital spokesman told AFP.
"We are saddened by his loss, but he died peacefully," his son-in-law Jnanranjan Deb, who was at the singer's bedside when he died, told the Press Trust of India news agency.
Dey, part of the golden era of Bollywood from the 1940s to the 1960s, was a versatile singer who enthralled generations of music lovers and moviegoers with his romantic ballads but also faster modern songs.
His body was taken from the hospital to an open-air theatre in Bangalore's central business district for crowds of fans to pay their respects.
One emotional follower burst into one of Dey's songs as he stood next to the body, which was covered in flowers with only Dey's face showing.
The singer's cremation took place later in the afternoon in northwestern Bangalore, with hundreds of fans joining grieving relatives including his daughter Rama at the ceremony.
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh led tributes to the musician, who recorded more than 3,000 songs during his career in numerous languages.
"I am deeply saddened to hear of the demise of the King of Melody, Manna Dey. An accomplished singer with a unique voice, he was multi-talented," Singh said in his condolence message.
Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan, for whom Dey sang in early hits such as "Sholay" (Embers) in 1975, described him as a "stalwart of the music world".
"Flooded with memories and his songs," Bachchan wrote on Twitter, where many in the industry paid tribute for man widely known as Mannada.
Born in Kolkata in May 1919 as Prabodh Chandra Dey, he had trained to be a wrestler as a college student, but struggled with the sport owing to worsening eyesight.
"By the time I was an adult, music had taken over my life and soul," Dey wrote in his autobiography, "Memories Come Alive".
After college, he travelled to Mumbai where he was first employed as an assistant to a music director, before making his debut as a playback singer in the 1943 film "Tamanna" (Desire).
His first big hit came seven years later in "Mashaal" (Torch) and his career went on to span more than six decades.
His most popular numbers included the 1970 hits "Zindagi Kaisi Hai Paheli" (Life is such a puzzle) for the film "Anand" (Happiness) and "Ae Bhai Zara Dekh Ke Chalo" (Hey brother, watch where you are going) for "Mera Naam Joker" (My Name is Joker).
Dey's last recording was for the 2006 movie "Umar" (Age).
The singer was as much at ease with a classical Indian song as he was with a peppy, youthful one. As well as Hindi, he sang in regional languages such as Bengali, Malayalam, Bhojpuri and Gujarati.
Rajendra Babu, a leading director in the Bangalore-based film industry, said Dey was widely admired by the country's moviemakers for his ability to sing in so many languages.
"Mannada was one of the greatest singers in the Indian subcontinent during the 20th century with a unique and original voice," he told AFP.
Later in life Dey was always seen wearing a brown fur cap, which was given to him by a fan at a winter concert in the northern region of Kashmir as he struggled to sing in the bitter cold.
Dey won various awards for his work in the music industry, including the Dadasaheb Phalke, the highest award in Indian cinema, in 2007.
But some felt he did not enjoy the same levels of fame and celebrity as his contemporaries Mohammed Rafi and Kishore Kumar, with whom he recorded a boisterous song for "Padosan" (Neighbour) in 1968.
Dey is survived by his two daughters. His wife Sulochana died of cancer last year.

Plot[edit]

The film opens with the revelation that violence has escalated in India, in which the central villain is Mogambo (Amrish Puri). Mogambo is a brilliant yet insane General whose goal is to conquer India. From his island, modeled after the island of Dr. No, Mogambo monitors the evil-doings perpetrated by his henchmen. All his subordinates know the formal salute "Hail Mogambo!", emphasizing his complete authority over his minions.
Arun Verma (Anil Kapoor) is an orphan and a street-walking violinist who rents a large, old house. There, he houses a dozen or so orphaned children and takes care of them with the help of his cook and caretaker Calendar (Satish Kaushik). Arun is poor, owes debts to the local food merchant Roopchand (Harish Patel), and is overdue to pay the landlord Maniklal (Yunus Parvez). In spite of these problems, Arun tries to look on the bright side of every situation. As time goes by, Calendar reminds Arun that the cost of running the home continues to rise. Arun decides to rent out the room on the first floor. When he goes to the local newspaper to run an advertisement for the room, he meets Seema Sohni (Sridevi) and makes her his tenant. They get off to a rocky start but Seema eventually becomes friends with everyone.
One day, Arun receives a mysterious letter from a family friend, Dr. Sinha (Ashok Kumar), who reveals that Arun's late father had created a device that would make its user invisible. With the directions in the letter, Arun, accompanied by his ward Jugal, enters his father's laboratory and finds the device. The device is in the shape of a gold watch worn on the wrist. When it is activated, it makes the wearer invisible to the naked eye. This invisibility is pervasive except for one flaw: when red light is focused on the wearer, he becomes visible. Arun and Jugal decide to keep the device a secret between them. Seema goes to a lavish party hosted by Teja and Daaga, where she performs a song under the guise of a Hawaiian dancer. She is nearly killed by the criminals after her disguise is spoiled, but Arun invisibly rescues her, styling himself "Mr. India". Thereafter, Seema falls in love with her rescuer, though not attracted to his civilian alter ego.
Mr. India later defeats Mogambo's men in several encounters, foiling their criminal plans. Mogambo's computer-aided intelligence teams reveal that Mr. India's specific actions against the gambling den bring benefit to Arun Verma. Mogambo has bombs disguised as toys, planted in places where children can find them. One of the bombs kills Arun's youngest and dearest charge, Tina, driving Arun to immense grief. Arun, Seema, Calendar, and the surviving children are brought before Mogambo. Mogambo tortures them so that they reveal Mr. India's true identity and the location of the invisibility device. Arun eventually volunteers to this when Mogambo threatens to drop two children into a pit of acid; but because Arun has dropped the device, he cannot become invisible to prove himself. Frustrated, Mogambo has them sent into the dungeons.
However, they are all able to escape. Mogambo activates four ICBMs, which are poised to destroy all of India. Arun confronts him, and the two fight. When Arun has overcome Mogambo, he deactivates the launch which culminates in the missiles detonating on the launchpad. Arun, Seema, Calendar, and the children escape, while Mogambo's fortress is destroyed. Mogambo himself dies in the fire.
Arun's dual identity remains a secret to most people, while he returns to his former life

Silsila

Rating-***/*****Silsila

Silsila is a 1981 Hindi romantic drama film directed by Yash Chopra. The film stars,Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar, Rekha and Kulbhushan Kharbanda, with Shashi Kapoor in a special appearance. It is said to be loosely inspired by the alleged real life love triangle of Amitabh-Jaya-Rekha, which was the most talked about affair back then.[2] On his last birthday, Yash Chopra revealed that he originally wanted to cast Parveen Babi and Smita Patil opposite Bachchan, but after consulting him, he chose to cast Jaya Bhaduri and Rekha in their respective roles.[3][4]
This was also the last film to feature Rekha with Amitabh Bachchan, putting an end to this popular on-screen pair and their rumored off-screen affair, forever. The film did only average business at the box office, much below than expectations. Over the years, however, it has gained strong cult following and today it is considered as a classic love triangle. The film is remembered for the powerful and everlasting performances of all of its leading characters. Yash Chopra himself considers this film (along with Lamhe), as his most favorite. The Music became a "superhit" upon the release of the film and is still as popular.
